Introducing Zoey Peterson! Zoey grew up in the US in New Jersey, moved to Tokyo after university, and joined B2C2 in March 2021 at our Toyko office. As someone who came from a psychology and education background, Zoey shares what it's been like working at a crypto company and what the day-to-day looks like as an account manager.

What were you doing before you joined B2C2?

For about 6 months, I was working as an executive recruiter. For 2 and a half years before that, I was an admissions counselor and SAT tutor at a cram school for international school students in Japan, and students in general who were looking to apply to universities abroad.

Did you have any crypto experience before you started at B2C2? And if not, what has exposure to the industry been like?'

I didn’t have any exposure to crypto before starting here, nor finance in general. One of the most interesting parts of crypto to me has been how it seems to be repeating much of financial history, only as though fast-forwarded - it came into being, and has evolved rapidly in terms of available products and services within just the last few years. It’s also in many ways equal parts social movement as financial, in terms of the spirit behind it. It’s been very interesting to observe as a newcomer. It’s also extremely volatile, so every day is very eventful.

What has struck you as unique at B2C2? What is your favourite thing about working at B2C2? What have you learned since working at B2C2?

I think it’s unique that anybody regardless of seniority or age can make their voice heard here. If someone’s a star, even if they were hired yesterday B2C2 listens to their ideas and what they have to contribute. I like the culture of the office. There’s a big emphasis on personal accountability that removes the need for micromanagement. I’ve learned a lot about the financial industry since I didn’t come from a finance background at all. I came in without knowing what CFDs were, for example, which should give you an idea of how much I’ve learned during my time here, since I now often have to explain our products to clients as an account manager.

What do you do at B2C2 and what do you enjoy most about your job?

I do many things at B2C2, including operations, account management, and recently recruiting and HR. Day to day I focus mostly on operations, as well as attend to client queries as an account manager, and in the evening when my urgent work is done I catch up on HR matters and recruiting. I most enjoy having a steady stream of things to do at all times. I like being busy and knowing that every day I’ve completed many tasks. I also like working together with the team; every day there’s something new that requires us to work together to understand and solve.

How would you describe B2C2’s culture?

I’d describe it as egalitarian, and also somewhere that gives people the benefit of the doubt, as well as many opportunities to grow. These three things really set it apart from most companies for me.

How have you grown since you’ve worked at B2C2?

This is the first job that I’ve had that feels like a career, in that I’ve gained skills that are helping me grow within B2C2, B2C2 grow as a firm, and me grow as an employee in general. I also feel like I’ve learned about many industries while working here (not only the crypto industry).

What are you reading/watching/listening to right now?

I’m watching Stranger Things 4 and Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7. I’m currently re-reading The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, and I’ve had Beyonce’s new song Break My Soul on heavy rotation.

What’s something you do in your free time?

I love reading, writing, and baking, mostly bread and cakes. Kneading dough is great for relieving stress, and so is magical realism.

What is something you find inspiration from?

Rather than what, if I may consider this a ‘who’ question, I find inspiration from my grandmother, who moved to America from Trinidad and made a life for herself. She’s a fearless woman, a widow with 4 children, who did incredibly well for herself. She inspired me to move from America to Japan and try to do the same.

If you had to have a career completely unrelated to what you are doing now, what would you do?

I studied psychology at university, so I would be doing a counseling psychology PhD (still considering this for someday in the future!)

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

To keep your jubilee in easy reach, or in other words to remember to laugh and not take things too seriously.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year?

I’m most looking forward to Japan hopefully opening its borders to tourists so my family can come visit me here in Tokyo.

What’s something you would say to someone considering entering the crypto industry?

Be prepared for volatility like you’ve never seen before.
